Healthy Relationship Tips

09 August 2013 By In Counselling Advice

Balancing togetherness and individuality is undoubtedly the key to a healthy relationship. Being a couple and at the same time maintaining a strong sense of yourself is not an easy one but it is important to manage your need for time together as well as your need for time apart.

There is certainly nothing wrong with being apart and doing 'your own thing' however it is important to find the middle ground and make sure that both you and your partner have quality time together and apart.

You love shopping but he hates it so you shop with friends. He loves football so he goes to matches with his mates. Doing things individually helps sustain a healthy relationship but it is important to make the time to talk and share what you have done when you both meet up again.

Tips

  • Work on not being too overly distant neither too close. Have a discussion about what your own needs are and how they can be negotiated. Hopefully your partner won't see your needs as threat to your relationship although maybe this will need to be explained sensitively to them.
  • This maybe a time of compromise and negotiation. Your Friday night meet up with friends might not happen every Friday night but maybe once a fortnight might work out better.
  • Make sure that when you come back from your trip to the shops or football match that you share and listen to each other's experiences.

If your love and relationship stresses and anxieties are becoming too much for you to cope with and you feel you need help managing them then please do call Carole for a FREE, confidential 15 minute consultation.
