Stress Burnout

Stress gives us plenty of warning that it is creeping up on us and doing us harm but more than not we choose to ignore the warning signs. That extra glass of wine each night, drunk in an attempt to blot out stress-related negative feelings is only the beginning. Because adrenaline runs high in a stressed people, we may take unnecessary or unusual risks and we may experience frequent headaches and problems with our digestive system and mood swings/ temper tantrums may become a feature of a normally well balanced person.

As these actions and feelings get out of control and we become more and more stressed we cease to function and ultimately stress burnout becomes a reality. If you feel you are burning out as a result of stress please do:

  • Seek help immediately from a medical practitioner, counsellor or stress management professional.
  • Try to maintain a work / life balance and take plenty of exercise – exercise is known to reduce the effects of stress on the body
  • Eat a healthy diet, drink plenty of water and do not skip meals.
  • If you are overcommitted at work speak out and say so. Do not try to be all things to all people. If you have problems in your personal life seek help now.
