In the past, online dating was the butt of many jokes. Now however, after statistics and proven relationships have been the result, online dating has become as mainstream as blind dates and socialising for the sake of meeting someone. No matter how commonplace it is, you may still have questions, should you trust people you meet over the internet? Is internet dating safe?
Go cautiously
Most things, online especially, should be entered into cautiously. Use a dating site that costs money to join, as that will automatically eliminate people who aren't really serious about finding someone. Don't put too much of your private information in your profile, use generalities instead of specifics. Tell what area you live in but not your address; tell your occupation, but not where you work. It's important to feel safe with whomever you interact with, both online and off.
Be honest in your profile, the people looking on the site are as nervous about you as you are them and they too want to find someone also. Don't get stuck boxing yourself into a 'type', have email or on-site conversations with people who reach out to you and reach out to those you are interested in. Internet dating can be a lot of fun and a great way to interact with and meet people who aren't in your immediate area and who you may have never met without the site.
And when you connect with someone you wish to meet, don't forget to meet them in a public place and make sure your friends know where you are going.
