Have you:
- Ever been in a room full of people and felt that you must just get out of the room?
- Been in the supermarket and felt like you were going to faint?
- Got ready to go on a date and found that you could not leave the bathroom?
- Been in a restaurant and felt like you were suffocating?
Is Worry Caused by Stress or Stress Caused by Worry?
I asked my colleagues what they thought about this question and I got some very interesting answers!
What really stuck in my mind was the following quotation ''worry never solves the problems of tomorrow, but robs today of its joy'' What a profound statement this is but try as we may it is not necessarily easy just to put our worries aside. It is possible to be a compulsive worrier both about the future or even the past and such worry does indeed rob us of the joy for the here and now.
FACT: Around 350 million people globally are already affected by depression and the World Health Organisation estimate it will be the single biggest burden of disease in the world by 2030.
Today, the World Federation for Mental Health is promoting the message that:
Making up or breaking up? Has your relationship hit the rocks?
We all love to loved but sometimes, for no reason, love is replaced by hurt. As the saying goes "you always hurt the ones you love" and so it is in relationships - perhaps more so in later life.
The days are getting shorter and the nights longer. This is the time of year that some people dread. Reduced light, dull weather and lower temperatures all tell us that autumn is here and winter is not far away. If you suffer from SAD (Seasonal affective disorder) then you will certainly be mourning the loss of summer and dreading the long nights of winter.
Is "Black Dog" nipping at your heels? Positive help for depression is at hand.
Spring is well and truly here. The sun is shining and the daffodils are providing a much needed dose of colour. For suffers of winter depression and SAD spirits are rising but for some people their depression and what is often described as bouts of "Black Dog" will not be so easily lifted.
Spare a thought for those caring for elderly relatives. Whilst having lunch by the sea on a beautiful sunny day I watched with admiration as a daughter looked after her elderly parents. Her patience as she helped them gently manage their food and the attention to detail she had paid to get them sitting comfortably was indeed an act of love.
This caring lady had taken the trouble to get two very elderly people to the coast for a treat. She had managed the sticks and wheelchair and with a smile on her face and she had given them a taste of the freedom they had once taken for granted.
Anxiety and depression can creep up on you without warning and often appear on the surface to come from nowhere. The awful wet and miserable weather we are having combined with the uncertain economic climate does not help lift depression and ease anxiety so if you feel your anxieties are overwhelming you it may be time to seek help.

Stress gives us plenty of warning that it is creeping up on us and doing us harm but more than not we choose to ignore the warning signs. That extra glass of wine each night, drunk in an attempt to blot out stress-related negative feelings is only the beginning. Because adrenaline runs high in a stressed people, we may take unnecessary or unusual risks and we may experience frequent headaches and problems with our digestive system and mood swings/ temper tantrums may become a feature of a normally well balanced person.
